It should look like your product, not like our product
Theme it in an afternoon with settings, or take the templates apart if you need to. No vendor badge, no vendor subdomain, no giveaway.
- No vendor branding
- Custom CSS and templates
- Per-project themes
How customisable is a TheDocs knowledge base?
There are three levels. Theme settings cover colours, typography, logos, favicon, spacing, header, footer and home page layout without any code. Custom CSS and JavaScript let you match a design system precisely and add third-party scripts. On Business and Enterprise you can override the underlying HTML templates for full control of the markup. Every level is per project, so different audiences can look completely different.
- No vendor badge or subdomain on any paid plan.
- Colours, fonts, logos and layout from settings, no code needed.
- Custom CSS and a script manager with head and body slots.
- HTML template overrides on Business and Enterprise.
- Light and dark mode, or force one.
- Per-project themes within one workspace.
What you can change
Start with settings. Reach for code only where settings run out.
Colour and type
Brand colours with automatic accessible contrast checking, your own web fonts or Google Fonts, and a type scale you can adjust.
Home page layout
Choose a hero with search, a category grid, a curated list of popular articles, or a combination - and reorder the blocks.
Header and footer
Your own navigation links, a sign-in button, a product switcher, legal links, and social icons. Or replace both entirely with your own markup.
Light and dark
Ship both and follow the reader's system preference, or force the one that matches your product.
Custom CSS and scripts
A CSS editor with live preview, and a script manager for analytics, chat and consent tools with separate head and body placement.
Template overrides
Override the article, category, search and home templates. Versioned, with a diff when the underlying template changes upstream.
Customisation that does not become technical debt
A theme in an afternoon
Most teams need brand alignment, not a redesign. That path should not require a front-end developer.
- Import brand colours from a hex list or paste your CSS variables.
- Contrast is checked as you pick, so a brand colour that fails accessibility is flagged before you publish it.
- Live preview against real articles, not a placeholder.
- Publish theme changes independently of content changes, and roll them back the same way.
And an escape hatch when you need one
Every documentation site eventually needs something the settings do not cover. The question is whether the tool lets you do it or you file a feature request.
- Custom CSS applied per project, with a scoped preview so you can test before publishing.
- Template overrides for article, category, search results, home and 404 pages.
- Handlebars-style variables give templates access to article metadata, breadcrumbs and navigation.
- Overrides are stored as files you can diff, review and roll back like any other change.
When we change a stock template, projects overriding it are notified with a diff rather than silently updated - so your override never breaks on a Tuesday.
